Why Most AI-Built SaaS Products Lack CI/CD

Ask an AI tool to build a feature and it will. Ask it to make shipping that feature safe and repeatable and it can do that too, but almost nobody asks.

Why the pipeline gets skipped

  • It isn't visible. A CI/CD pipeline adds no features users can see, so it never makes it into a prompt.
  • Platforms hide the problem. One-click deploys feel like automation, but without tests or review they just ship whatever is on your laptop, faster.
  • Solo builders don't feel the pain yet. With one person and one branch, "it worked on my machine" feels like enough, until a second developer or a paying customer arrives.
  • AI-generated tests are rare. Without tests there's nothing for a pipeline to run, so it seems pointless.

What it costs you

Without CI/CD, every change is a manual, unrepeatable event. Regressions reach customers. Nobody can say exactly what code is running in production. Rolling back means remembering what you changed. And because AI tools make changes quickly and in large batches, the blast radius of each deploy is bigger than it looks.

A minimal pipeline that's good enough

You don't need a platform team. For most early-stage products, this is enough:

Deployment
  1. Protect the main branch and require pull requests.
  2. Run the build and any tests automatically on every pull request.
  3. Add dependency and secret scanning.
  4. Deploy automatically from main, first to a staging or preview environment.
  5. Make sure you can roll back to the previous version quickly.

Then ask your AI tool to write tests for the most important user journeys. That's a prompt worth adding to your project rules. Our AI Agent & Prompt Refinement service exists for exactly this kind of standard.
